Why travelling by air is nothing to fear Millions of people throughout the world are terrified of the very idea of flying, and on the face of it who can blame them? After all there you are packed into a flimsy structure a couple of miles up in the air in an atmosphere that is too thin to breathe and so cold that if you were exposed to it for more than a few seconds you would freeze to death; packed into a metal tube propelled by exploding chemicals with millions of parts, the failure of any one of which could cause the aircraft to blow up, set on fire or tumble uncontrollably into the sea. No wonder they are nervous! However; man is an ingenious animal and rather than be somewhat akin to committing mass suicide flying in a modern airliner is the safest way of travelling, bar none. Worried? You need insurance - try this site for young driver insurance or taxi insurance! Every now and again there is a well publicised accident involving an aircraft and these can be real tragedies with many people suffering a very quick death at the same time; and without trying to take anything away from the horror of this or the traumatic effect that this has upon the victims' relatives and other loved ones it is sometimes necessary to sit back and look at these things in proportion. Air crashes make the headlines for one particularly good reason; they happen extremely rarely! Every day, throughout the world there are almost 3 million people who take a journey by aircraft; every year there are many millions of aircraft take offs and landings without any dramas or unforeseen incidents; but you never hear about these because telling you how safe flying is will not sell many newspaper copies! According to reliable statistics an individual would now have to fly roughly 1.5 billion miles before being involved in a flying accident; that is equivalent to flying all the way around the Earth 60,000 times! What is more, flying is getting safer and safer all the time and even the human error possibilities are being factored out of the equation with multiple backup safety systems in all modern aircraft. There are risks involved in getting out of bed, in walking down a staircase, in eating a meal, in bending down to pick up the morning post and these all fade into insignificance when compared to the risks involved in driving down the road in the opposite direction to other drivers who may be distracted, tired, drunk or just plain incompetent! All of life is a great risk from the moment we are born until the moment we pass over to whatever lies beyond; but one of the lowest risks that we run is flying in a modern commercial airliner.
